The Arts Tower,  part of Sheffield University is this year fifty years old.  It is Grade II listed and features the worlds largest Paternoster

Built by the Schindler Lift Company the Paternoster is made up of thirty eight, two person cars in a chain of open compartments that move in a loop without stopping up and down the building.  The journey between floors takes 13 seconds and passengers can step on or off the Paternoster at any floor making it the most effective way to travel between floors.

The name Paternoster (“Our Father”, the first two words of the Lords Prayer in latin) was originally applied to the device because the elevator is in the form of a loop and is thus similar to rosary beads used as an aid in reciting prayers.

    1. Hi Delphine, Thanks for your kind comments. The Arts Tower and the Paternoster are a joy to visit. Me and Rich (the man reading the newspaper) had a great time getting these shots. There is a further Arts Tower project in the pipeline. Stay tuned and in a few months all will be revealed…! Best wishes, Mr Cafe 🙂
