Forty Five

Walk for 5 minutes and take a photograph from where you stand.  Repeat for the duration of 45 minutes to complete a set of 9 images.  Take only one photograph at each location and none in between.  Spend no more than one minute composing the image then move on to the next.  The first image at each location will be the one you keep.  Do not delete or retake any images.

The above gallery of images were taken in Sheffield on 5 October  09:15 – 10:35hrs. The walk started at Duke Street and finished on Cricket Inn Road.  The first photograph (of the double yellow lines) was taken on Talbot Street.

45 is a photographic exercise in creating images from random subjects.  Images that in other circumstances you may not consider photographing.  With the discipline of first shot only, in a fixed period of time the photographs are likely to be more intuitive.  Some images will work better than others.  The fun is in the taking and in the review of images captured.  You may be surprised by which locations provide the most interesting shots.  My gallery of images were taken with a zoom lens.  45 can be made more challenging by using a prime lens to complete the 9 images.   45 applies a set of rules to challenge the photographer to work outside of their normal way  thinking and working.  Good and less good photographs are equally valid and when viewed as a set may offer some interesting insights, ideas and learning on which to reflect.  They may inspire others to give it a go…

If you wish to participate in 45 then please leave a comment below with a link to your gallery of nine images and also the date, time and place.  Or visit the new Forty Five site on the links below and leave details there.  Of course you can participate in 45 without leaving any information. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the experience and it may even reveal something new in your photography.

Forty Five started as an idea first aired on Little Bits of Sheffield and has now evolved into a brand new wordpress blog called Forty Five.  The new site has been set up to encourage participants to share their images, words and experience of Forty Five.

Please to visit the new site and if you are inspired to have a go then do share your experience.   It is early days for the new site but hopefully over time it will be refined and developed further.

One of the first people to respond to the original 45 blog post on Little Bits of Sheffield was Steel City Anna and her images and experience can be found HERE.  I very much enjoyed her photographs and also the account of her walk.

Have fun with your camera….

Thanks for taking time to read about Forty Five

    1. I know you are an avid follower of Postcard Cafe and I’m pleased you like the idea of Forty Five.
Might we expect a 45 from your good self?
It would be great if you wanted to participate and for your work be put on the new Forty Five site 🙂
      Best wishes

    1. The idea has been generally well received with a few people saying they hope to give it a try.
I really enjoy your photography and I’d love to see what your 45 might look like? Also any comments on your experience?
I enjoyed reading Steel City Anna’s notes about her walk and I think they help the viewer to appreciate the images.
Working with fixed rules changes so much that we are familiar with and also the things we take for granted when we have free choices.
I have been wanting for some time to come up with an idea for a blog where I could invite photographers to participate and contribute. Forty Five feels like it levels the playing field a bit and also means that it is unlikely photographers will contribute images that they may be best known for.
It is only 45 minutes so people don’t have to commit an enormous amount of time.
Hopefully they will have some fun along the way…
I do hope you give it a whirl 🙂
      Best wishes

  1. A great idea! I love the concept, and any way of thinking about photography in a new way has got to be good, particularly for those of us intent on blogging/posting/photographing on a daily basis! This is definitely something I will be participating in – can you let me have a spare 45 minutes, though, please?!

    1. I’m so pleased to read your comment. Having just spotted your likes I was about to drop you a message inviting you to participate. I think you’ll enjoy your 45 minutes when you find them! The concept of 45 has generally been well received.
If you do participate it would be great to reblog your images on the new Forty Five sight. Also if you write any notes about your experience then it would be good to add those too 🙂
Obviously I would add links back to your site…
      Good luck and best wishes
