‘Naked Ladies’ & The Last Flowers of Summer | Volume 2

Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or ‘naked ladies‘, is a toxic autumn-blooming flowering plant which resembles the true crocus, but is actually a member of the plant family Colchicaceae, unlike the true crocuses which belong to the family Iridaceae. In this volume of images the ‘Naked Ladies’ are seen in photographs one, three and the last two. They gained their nickname of ‘Naked Ladies’ because of the leafless flowers that grow directly from the oval shaped corms.
